"This book is SO filled with incredible anecdotal experience by practicing veterinarians using Reiki. The common thread here is that the future of how we care for our animals certainly DOES involve Reiki as a support to veterinary medicine. This book is a MUST READ for all animal people, Reiki practitioners and veterinarians. Kathleen yet again has come out with a well researched, well written and well structured book that makes the information so approachable. Thanks so much for all you do for the animals!"

Vets on Animal Reiki The Power of Animal Reiki Healing in Veterinary Practice Kathleen Prasad 9781090529534 Books Reviews
- I have been a part of the Reiki community in general since the fall of 2004, and part of the Animal Reiki community since 2013. This book, by Kathleen Prasad, presented by the Shelter Animal Reiki Association is excellent and I recommend it for anyone interested in Animal Reiki as it provides insights into how some veterinarians that have incorporated Reiki into their practices. It also highlights, by example, what things a veterinarian can do and how different that is than for a non-medical Reiki practitioner and it gives heart-felt responses to things that have happened. Thank you Kathleen!!
In the Foreward to the book, she describes how Reiki seems to work based on promising results from National Institutes of Health (NIH), peer-reviewed studies published over the past 20 years, in terms of reducing stress, pain levels, anxiety, and depression in humans, and reducing stress and fostering relaxation in animals.
She further describes how Reiki is not an alternative to, but complementary support of traditional medical care and practice for humans in hospitals, nursing homes and hospice centers, as well as veterinary clinics, animal shelters and animal sanctuaries world-wide.
This book is about veterinarians who have incorporated Reiki into their practices. She clearly distinguishes between licensed veterinary medical practitioners and how they use their medical tools and training along with their Animal Reiki experience to inform their diagnoses and treatment decisions, versus specific limitations that are necessarily imposed on how lay practitioners practice when they have not completed training and licensing.
She reminds all of us Animal Reiki lay practitioners of the importance of abiding by the Animal Reiki Code of Ethics she authored in 2008, and which has been adopted widely. As she points out, “This Code sets apart our profession as a meditative, non-medical practice that does not diagnose and does not interfere with the practice of veterinary medicine in any way. Practitioners are not required to take medical/anatomical training because the meditative approach is always the same, no matter what health issue an animal faces. The Code of Ethics encourages Animal Reiki practitioners to simply support the healing program prescribed by veterinarians with the addition of Animal Reiki when asked.†The Code of Ethics is a key instructional element of every Animal Reiki class that I teach, regardless of level.
She next describes the Shelter Animal Reiki Association (SARA) as “a non-profit organization that teaches and promotes meditation practices to create a peaceful, healing environment within shelters and other animal care settings.â€
Kathleen tells us that SARA is “committed to upholding and promoting the healing power of compassionate presence through the Animal Reiki Practitioner Code of Ethics. We pride ourselves on the advancement of the welfare of animals and the professionalism of our vocation.â€
Finally, Kathleen describes how she and SARA follow the Let Animals Leadâ„¢ method, which helps assure competence, quality and ethical standard in the practice of Animal Reiki.
I consider the Let Animals Leadâ„¢ method to be one of the most exciting practices to be formalized within Animal Reiki and one of, if not the most useful tool for explaining Animal Reiki to anyone asking. The 6 Pillars in graphic form, provides a summary, and powerful reminders of that Animal Reiki practitioners and teachers of this tradition use meditation-based practices and the approaches taken when interacting with animals. They are as follows
1. The practices are based on traditional Japanese Reiki techniques and philosophy.
2. Touch is used only when animals seek it out, and then only as a compassionate support.
3. Mental focus techniques develop an “All is Well†state of mind for the practitioner who sees the animal’s perfection in the present moment, rather than focusing on what’s “wrong.â€
4. Meditation is taught as a state of mind with flexible physical forms.
5. Animal Reiki is mindfulness meditation practiced “with†our animals, rather than an energy therapy done “to†them.
6. This method acknowledges and honors each animal as a spiritual teacher and healer in his/her own right. Practitioners learn to listen and become receptive to their spiritual wisdom and healing gifts.
Moving from the Foreward into the Introduction, Kathleen goes on to briefly describe what Reiki is, how it is used, the benefits of Animal Reiki, what an Animal Reiki Practitioner does, what a Reiki practitioner does not do, how Reiki can help animals, why Reiki is an ideal holistic therapy for animals, what creates a successful Animal Reiki treatment, what a typical Animal Reiki Treatment look like, answering whether or not Animal Reiki is a “hands on†healing system, and where the best locations are for an animal to receive a Reiki treatment in a shelter. These are brief looks, but provide ample background for the rest of the book.
The remaining chapters of this book contain interviews that Kathleen conducted with five veterinarians that incorporated Animal Reiki into their practices. Within the interviews, they describe experiences they had over the years integrating Animal Reiki principles and practices into their own veterinary practices. I found this information helpful in trying to understand the prospective mindsets of veterinarians that I may be approaching to do volunteer work. Footnotes are provided in the interview chapters as needed, so the reader can do some follow up.
In addition, there is a copy of the Animal Reiki Practitioner Code of Ethics developed by Kathleen, provided at the end of the book, as well as well as additional information about the Shelter Animal Reiki Association. - I am a Sara practitioner and have practiced Reiki with animals and people. Kathleen and her wonderful teachers are really expressing what Reiki can do for not just animals but for the world. Life in general becomes more peaceful, and this book really exemplifies the profession of Veterinarians who have embraced this modality of healing and love. It’s wonderful to see it in the mainstream and the book raises my hopes it will be more adapted by the western Veterinarians as a complementary therapy they offer here. I certainly would prefer a vet who is trained in Reiki over one who is not! I highly recommend this boom to anyone interested in animals and animal reiki and the professionals who use it ! Well done SARA!
- Just finished reading this important book and found it so very informative. Kathleen Prasad, President of The Shelter Animal Reiki Association (SARA), interviews 4 established vets using Animal Reiki in their work with their animal clients and sometimes, the people who care for them.
The addition of this book to Kathleen's long list of successful and informative books and manuals will create an opening for discussion of the effects of complementary therapies in a previously hard to reach community.
I enjoyed reading the personal journeys each doctor made to begin including Reiki in their vet practice. The examples of Reiki with their patients are compelling. Compassion fills their work and informs their decisions for the animal's highest good. I would happily take my animals to any of these vets.
In addition, Kathleen asks each vet how practitioners can best approach their local vets to establish a connection and offer Reiki. Their answers are thoughtful and informative as they outline what would work best.
The final story of SARA's International Director offering Reiki in an operating room in India is a perfect example of why Reiki is needed in every area of an animal's care.
Kathleen, through her own work with animals has compiled engaging questions that really get to the heart of these veterinarians' experiences with Reiki.
If you are a serious Animal Reiki practitioner this is a book you must read! - This book is SO filled with incredible anecdotal experience by practicing veterinarians using Reiki. Thanks so much for all you do for the animals!
- Being a Licensed Veterinary Technician and a Reiki 2 Practitioner, I have been working to incorporate Reiki into my daily work with animals and have been seeing great results. I set an intention prior to entering a room with a pet and before and after surgeries and treatments and have noticed animals are more relaxed. This book provided a lot of good information about how Reiki is being used by veterinarians in practice and how to try and introduce it to clients and veterinarians which I have been a bit hesitant to do, being fairly new at it. It gave me some good ideas of how to offer Reiki and how to best explain what it is in a way that clients can understand. It is very exciting to see how Reiki is being used in so many human and animal hospitals and animal shelters for the greatest of all good!
- Enjoyed reading this book. It has motivated me to enroll in a Reiki program and learn how I can share Reiki with our dogs as well as those we visit with at our local shelter. This book provides a great prospective from both the practitioners as well as the Veterinarians who now include Reiki services in their practices.
